A FREE two-day program providing guidance for remote youth aged 12 to 26 years to enter art prizes with practice and theory skills. Visiting artist Katie Whyte will guide participants through the process of applying to award opportunities, such as The John Villiers art prize and how to develop their own ideas in the studio through planning and drawing experimentation with art materials.

SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER

TIMES: 10am to 3pm (1-hour lunch) DURATION: 4 hours
WHERE: Neighbourhood Centre (Training Room)
               75 Elderslie Street, Winton 4735
DAY ONE: Presentation and activities
MATERIALS: notepad, pen, sketchbook

  • Get to know artist Katie Whyte, her art practice and history.
  • Learn about art prizes: Reasons to enter them, what competitions are available for emerging youth. See examples of art prizes and images of past winners.
  • Steps on how to enter an art prize: Understanding prize requirements, fees, support material and timelines
  • What is an artist bio? Explore examples of other artists bios and learn to write a short artist statement of your own.
  • Artwork requirements. How to present your artwork for judging and make it installation ready. Practical advice on framing, installation, shipping and how to photograph different artforms.

SUNDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER

TIMES: 10am to 3pm (1-hour lunch) DURATION: 4 hours

DAY TWO: Presentation and studio
MATERIALS: Bring notes from Saturday’s workshop, some materials supplied. We encourage you to bring materials you are wanting to work with.

  • What is a creative theme? Explore your own art style and practice to develop ideas to fit an exhibition theme.
  • Exploring themes in the studio: The role of studio practice and experimentation
  • Creating a visual diary to collect ideas
  • Begin to explore the theme with drawing
  • Continue to develop artwork ideas
  • Explore practical methods of working, ways of using materials.
  • One on one feedback on themes and participants ideas+
